It’s
the first biography of Angelo Bruno, a dynamo of a man whose name is used
like a bomb to stun. For all of the sensationalism around Bruno, there
had not been a history of this boss’ life and what he did to become
the big Mafia boss of Philadelphia until 25 years after his death. So
it’s worth a separate review because the book gives so much proof
on why Bruno was no “Gentle Don” and how he tolerated almost
half a dozen of his business partners, (the ones on paper) to deal in
drugs. Makes you wonder about this Bruno guy. This book showed how Bruno
made enemies in the 1950s that lasted for decades, until he was shot down
in cold blood. There’s no death scene of Bruno here, only the groundwork
on why he irked so many of the South Philly mobsters. This bio shows a
complex man, a man with a hidden dark side that he hid very well. Philadelphia
history at the time of Bruno’s ascendance mixed into the gangsters’
collusion of magistrates, judges, high-ranking cops and others on Bruno’s
and his fellow Mafiosi’s payrolls.
The Jewish Mob has its own chapter, as do the biographies of Bruno’s
predecessors, Joe Ida and A. Dominic Pollina. This book blows away so
many other mob books on the facts that are supported by reports from
the FBI, Philadelphia Police, the newspaper accounts and other sources
that one wonders why newspaper reporters lied about Bruno and created
a myth around him. (Propaganda is more like it.) Read this book for
information about the “sleeper” Mafiosi, the Sicilian Mafiosi
in South Jersey and how the FBI and Philly Police knew about the Mafia
in Philadelphia long before any writer gave them any credit. What FBI
Director J. Edgar Hoover knew about the Mafia in Philly will also make
you think twice that he ignored the mob. Great information in here and
“to the point” history that makes this book a treasure for
any mob fan or fan of Philly’s underworld. |
